Election Period
If you’ve ever wondered how Medicare Mark to be, I’ll be sharing with you today the story of how and why I got into the Medicare business.
It all started when I got out of college and was working as a waiter. There was a Halloween costume contest coming up and I entered it along with a hundred of other contestants.
I came as a potted plant and long story short, I won the $1,000 first prize with a costume that was made of a pot cut in half tied with the topsiders in. I was wrapped in burlap and had olive branches sticking all over me so I would look like the real deal.
My potted plant costume was so good that somebody in the audience actually poured their drink into the pot I’m wearing thinking I was just part of the decorations!
Getting Into the Insurance Field
So with that thousand dollars, I started a lawn service called the Lawn King. We were cutting grass for a customer when the owner of the house came out and he said to me, “You know, you’d be really good at my business.”
And I asked him what’s his business. He said, “We’re a company called United Insurance Company of America.” So I went in for an interview, and his company was an industrial insurance company.
That’s the only kind of company where you can have a temporary license. In other words, before you’re even licensed, you can actually still sell.
So I started working there and got assigned to a ghetto area. My job was to collect weekly premiums for burial insurance and my stint there was scary at time. For example, I was collecting payment from a customer’s house which was next to a crack house.
As I got into my car, a white cop pulls me over and the lady who I just collected a payment from runs out the front door and said, “Officer, officer leave him alone, he’s my insurance man.”
That’s when I realized that it wasn’t for me.
Switching Jobs and Earning My Expertise
After that realization, I applied and found another job with a company called Humana Healthcare in 1990. Within the first couple of years, I became one of their top 100 hundred employees. That was in 1992 and I was ranked 38th.
The reason I was able to excel is because I cared about my job and how to help people get the most out of their insurance plans.
I continued working for Humana Healthcare for five years. And near the end of that, I started learning other things. I would say that my openness to learning has been really crucial in my growth and development in the field of Medicare.
The good thing about working there is that they offer different licenses such as life, health, duties, securities licenses, mortgage license, and real estate license, which I got all.
After moving I built an office in Oxford, Florida, near The Villages that houses the largest senior community in America, and some people say, the world.
Fast forward to 2019 and I’m still in the Medicare business advising retirees on how to get the best plan for them.
In this business, you have to be able to deliver value in order to have staying power.
The only difference is that I have a nice office now and have decided to bring my expertise online as well. This way, I could reach and help more people. So far, the response has been pretty fantastic and I couldn’t be more happier with what we’re doing!
